Rabia al-Basri Life History

Birth:

Rabia was born between 95 and 99 Hijri in Basra, Iraq, into a poor but respected family. She was the fourth daughter and named Rabia, meaning “fourth.” According to the stories, her family was so poor that they had no oil to light a lamp or cloth to wrap her in when she was born. When her mother asked her father to borrow some oil from a neighbor, he refused, as he had vowed never to ask anything from anyone but God. However, to please his wife, he went to the neighbor’s house but returned without asking for anything.

That night, he had a dream where the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) told him not to worry, as the daughter born to him was blessed and holy. The Prophet (s.a.w) said that through her intercession, 70,000 people from his Ummah would be forgiven. He also instructed Rabia’s father to go to the governor of Basra with a message. The message reminded the governor that he usually recited 100 Durood (blessings) on the Prophet every night and 400 on Friday nights, but had forgotten the previous Friday. As compensation, the governor was to give Rabia’s father 400 dinars.

Rabia’s father woke up in joy. He wrote down the message, and delivered it to the governor. The governor was extremely moved by the message of Holy Prophet PBUH. He merrily not only gave Rabia’s father 400 dinars but also donated 10,000 dirhams to the poor as a sign of gratitude. He told Rabia’s father to come to him for help whenever needed.

Early Life:

After her father’s death, a famine hit Basra, and Rabia was separated from her sisters. According to legend, she was captured by robbers and sold as a slave. Her new master made her work hard, but despite her difficult life, Rabia would spend her nights in prayer and often fasted during the day.

One night, her master awoke and was drawn to the sound of her sorrowful prayers. He saw a divine light surrounding her as she prayed fervently to God.

The master immediately felt it was wrong to keep such a holy person as a servant. He decided to serve her instead. The next morning, he told her that he would serve her and that she could stay as the mistress of the house. If she wanted to leave, he would free her from being a servant.

She chose to leave the house so she could worship in peace. The master agreed, and she left.

Introduced the idea a Divine and Unconditional love for the God:

The most important contribution of Rabia Basri the Mystic to this line of spirituality is that, she had given the concept of loving and obeying the God as He deserve it. And not from the fear of hell ,misfortunes and bad luck that one could think of prevailing on herself. Her love was unconditional ,pure ,fearless and lust less.

This idea of Divine Love that Rabia introduced ,was way more important to discuss than her strict lifestyle and obviously her long hours of worship. She was the first Mystic or Sufi to teach that God should be loved for who He is, not out of fear ,as earlier Sufis believed. This new dimension of spirituality he had added is also known as Doctrine of unconditional love for God by Rabia Basri.

For herself, she aimed even higher. She believed those motives for worshiping God, out of fear of Hell or hope for Paradise, were unworthy of true devotion. She saw fear and hope as barriers that blocked people from truly seeing God.

Rabia al-Basri death:

Hazrat Rabia was in her early eighties when she passed away. Having stayed true to her spiritual path until the end. She always believed she was united with her Beloved (God). As she told her Sufi friends, “My Beloved is always with me.”

She died in Jerusalem in 185 A.H.(Zirkali, al-A`lam, vol. 3, p. 10, col. 1, quoting ibn Khalikan).

As her time to leave this finite world approached, many respected spiritual leaders of that time gathered around her. As she knew her time has come. She told them, “Go away and make room for the Angels.”

They left the room and closed the door. While waiting outside, they heard a voice from within reciting, “O peaceful soul! Return to your Lord.”

After a while, everything became quiet. When they entered the room, they found that Hazrat Rabia had passed away and her soul had returned to Allah.

She said one of the most inspiring quote about death of a person who is beloved by God.
